ABOUT us
The 2009 Census reports that 69% of children in the United States reside with both biological parents. That means almost one-third of our children reside in a home that has a different configuration.
MMS Banana Splits is a group for children living in a home that does not contain both biological parents. The group helps children understand that there are many kinds of families and that “normal” means many different kinds of families. Children in the group may have families that have experienced divorce or the loss of a parent by death or incarceration. Other children live in single-family households, have two moms or two dads, are raised by grandparents, live in foster care, or have some other living arrangement.
The mission of MMS Banana Splits is to give children an opportunity to embrace the family that they have. MMS Banana Splits encourages children to identify similarities across different family configurations, thereby promoting tolerance and appreciation for differences and fostering a sense of community. Through creative and interactive activities, students participating in MMS Banana Splits learn how to draw upon their own personal strengths to help themselves, and each other, in our diverse society.
